Transport for NSW (TfNSW) is responsible for planning, developing and managing over 17,000 kilometers of arterial road network across Regional NSW. Regular maintenance work is required to provide maximum social, economic and environmental benefits to the state. Asset Vision supports Transport for NSW in delivering on this objective across Regional NSW.

Summary

In early 2019, Transport for NSW (Roads and Maritime Services) introduced the Asset Vision Platform to manage the recording and delivery of Inspections, Defects, Accomplishments and Capital Works across the five Regional NSW Regions.

Asset Vision was awarded this contract as the result of a competitive tender process which evaluated the most suitable Computerised Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) in the market, weighing up features, functionality, ease of use and value for money.

Asset Vision has provided TfNSW Regional Maintenance with an industry leading platform to transact digitally in the asset inspection and maintenance space.  TfNSW can record, communicate and manage asset inspection and condition information in real time with all stakeholders, resulting in better information, as well as considerable financial and time savings.

Through the use of the latest generation smart devices and web technology, TfNSW staff and Contractors have increased confidence, compliance and transparency in their management of maintenance contracts.

The Challenge

TfNSW conducts its management of NSW’s State Road and Roadside Asset network in accordance with legislative requirements and regulations. TfNSW has the responsibility of ensuring that the State network is safe, well maintained, and fit for its primary purpose of moving people and freight safely and efficiently. A well managed and maintained road network is crucial to the economic prosperity, social inclusion and environmental sustainability of the State.

To fulfil its responsibilities, TfNSW engages its own internal works crews, as well as civil maintenance contractors to undertake Road and Roadside maintenance and management activities on behalf of the state of NSW.

TfNSW needed to adopt a modern, cloud based platform, which was easy to pick up and use on the latest iPhone and iPad hardware.  The platform needed to be capable of recording all required maintenance activities, as well as leverage modern technology such as Location Services and Push Notifications in the field, ensuring seamless communication and reliable data capture.

The solution needed to enable the timely exchange of information between TfNSW, its maintenance crews as well as its third party Contractors; including routine road and roadside maintenance field inspections, reactive and routine defect reporting, as well as maintenance and capital works activities undertaken on road and roadside assets.

TfNSW needed the platform to house its entire, hierarchical asset register, including Roads, Segments, Rest Areas, Bridges, Culverts, Stockpile Sites, Safety Cameras, Noise Walls and Slopes, enabling proper recording of activities back to their asset for full traceability and history.

This solution had to provide outstanding value for money given limited maintenance budgets, and had to manage the logging, tracking, monitoring, reporting, costing and compliance of maintenance activities in accordance with the M3 works specification and in accordance with the New South Wales legislative requirements.

And finally, TfNSW needed to work closely with a vendor who was willing to expand and enhance core application functions.

The Solution

Asset Vision was adapted to meet the needs of TfNSW and now provides…

  A centralised Web and iOS/Android device based platform to record and action Inspections, Defects, Capital Works, Customer Requests and Incidents

  Integration with TfNSW spatial data systems to ensure accurate and comprehensive location data

  Tools to support data management, reporting and processes including district administration tasks.

  An Asset Register which provides improved asset visibility, and can reflect current and historical asset information

 TfNSW Regional Maintenance division, as well as its crews and maintenance contractors can work together on the same platform across the RMS Regional areas (Northern, Western, Hunter, Southern), and with NSW Local Government through Routine Maintenance Council Contracts (RMCC)
